Hair
While hair loss is a natural part of the aging process and can happen to anyone, it is more common among men. It typically starts with the thinning of the hair and progresses from there. Most hair loss is the result of genetics, but other factors can come into play. For example, hair loss may be a symptom of an underlying illness or the result of a hormone imbalance.
Flax products may be beneficial for the natural prevention and treatment of hair loss. Flaxseed and the lignans found inside are full of ingredients that promote healthy hair. Lignans are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which produce moisture, strengthen hair, and promote a healthy scalp. To maximize the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids found in lignans, experts recommend that they are ingested from the hull of the flaxseed..
Acatris, a Dutch ingredients company, conducted a study to determine if ingesting flax lignans daily would reduce hair loss. Results showed lignans to assist in hair loss by stopping enzymes from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is what causes hair follicles to shrink, producing thinner hair growth and eventually eliminating growth altogether. Participants in the study also reported that the overall health of their scalp improved with the use of lignans.
The Acatris study shows great promise for men and women experiencing baldness. Many believe baldness is caused by dead hair follicles. However, the hair follicles are actually lying dormant due to the DHT. Regularly consuming lignans can lower DHT levels and may revive the hair follicles, eventually causing the hair to grow back.
