Diabetes

For individuals diagnosed with diabetes, successfully managing blood sugar levels is a crucial piece of everyday life. Failure to control or improve glucose levels can lead to short-term problems such as hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It can also cause long-term damage to essential organs like the kidneys, heart, eyes, and nerves.

To maintain blood sugar levels, healthcare professionals recommend people with diabetes make nutrition changes, start exercising regularly, lose weight, and take medication. While making such changes is excellent for managing diabetes and improving overall health, research has begun to show promise regarding the use of flax hull lignans for the treatment of diabetes.

Recent studies indicate the ingestion of flax products, especially flax hull lignans, may decrease insulin resistance in both diabetics and pre-diabetics. Further, research suggests flax hull lignans may also reduce the risk of developing type 1 and type 2 diabetes overall because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Experts believe omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids reduce the risk of developing diabetes by regulating insulin sensitivity in phospholipid membranes.

Another randomized, double-blind trial revealed that diabetic symptoms saw improvement with the use of flax hull lignans. Hemoglobin A1C testing showed participant’s blood sugar levels were in better control with the consumption of lignans. Much research has been done to support the effects of using lignans to treat diabetes, and preliminary results suggest flax hull lignans may have a positive impact on diabetes.
